The Blockchain & Climate Institute was founded in 2017 at COP23 in Bonn in direct response to a critical global challenge: how to ensure that emerging technologies—particularly blockchain and artificial intelligence—are harnessed to accelerate, not hinder, the implementation of the Paris Agreement.  

  

From its inception, BCI has served not as a conventional think tank, but as an international institute with a public mission: to strengthen climate governance, uphold environmental integrity, and support nations—especially developing countries—in accessing the tools, finance, and frameworks required to deliver real climate outcomes.  

  

Today, BCI operates across multiple pillars of global climate architecture. We provide technical assistance to UNFCCC negotiators, build capacity within national delegations across Africa, Asia, and the Pacific, and contribute directly to international standards-setting processes as a Category A Liaison to ISO/TC 322 on Sustainable Finance and contributor to ISO/TC 307 on blockchain governance. Our experts have supported Article 6 readiness, developed mechanisms for digital MRV, and advanced new models of climate finance aligned with global transparency and accountability goals.  

  

We do this guided by a simple conviction: trust is the currency of climate action. In an era where climate commitments must be measurable, verifiable, and tradeable across borders, distributed ledger technologies and artificial intelligence are not theoretical innovations—they are essential instruments for delivering equity, transparency, and scale.  

  

BCI’s role is to ensure that these technologies are deployed responsibly, in service of the public good and in alignment with international law and multilateral agreements. Whether through capacity-building for over 55 countries, pilot projects on adaptation finance, or our work supporting small island and climate-vulnerable states, we remain steadfast in our commitment to advancing climate solutions that are inclusive, implementable, and future-proof.
